Adding Treat to Your Prepper Pantry

Building a prepper pantry is a key piece of preparing for an emergency that can cut off your access to food. It’s a must-do for everyone that is working to build a sustainable homestead. Not all emergencies are “apocalyptic”. Some are as simple as a major storm wiping out access to roads. Your pantry is how you will get through any situation that can affect your access to the supply chain without having to worry. But what good is a pantry that doesn’t have something good and yummy in it? We all deserve to have a treat sometimes! Adding treats to your prepper pantry is a very important, and often overlooked, part of getting your homestead ready for difficult times.

Picking Treats for Food Storage

Picking the right treats for your food storage is absolutely a matter of personal preference. What one person has in their prepper pantry for delicious snacks is not necessarily going to be the same for another. When you’re working on your lists of supplies, spend some time thinking over what your favorite snack foods are. Do you like brownies? Cake? Or are salty foods like chips or pretzels more to your liking?

While keeping a large stock of these items on hand in their prepared states probably isn’t the wisest idea, you can easily store up a few bags or boxes. The real challenge is making sure that you’re prepared if you suddenly can’t get them for more than a month or so.

Storing Treats in Your Pantry

If you can’t store boxes of cake mix and bags of pretzels for the next 10 years in your pantry, how are you supposed to stock up on prepper pantry treats? There are a few different ways but the best way is to simply learn to make them yourself. This way you can purchase all the necessary supplies and have them on hand, ready to make at any time!

For Example:

One of your favorite treats is chocolate cake. Normally you would just buy a cake mix but you don’t have the space to keep a year’s worth of cake mix and they may not keep that long. However in your food storage you probably already have:

  • Sugar
  • Flour
  • Powdered Eggs
  • Powdered Dry Milk
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Vegetable Oil

In the same space that a couple of boxes of cake mix would take up, you can easily add a few containers of cocoa powder and a bag of powdered sugar. With that, you’ve got all the ingredients you need to make a delicious chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing. See! Storing prepper pantry treats is easy.
